lone buildings gallery
This is a series of photos from the island of Cyprus. Mostly from the capital, Nicosia.
After the war of 1974 that separated Greek and Turkish Cypriots with a border, whole neighbourhoods on both sides were abandoned for being too dangerous to live or work in. For the next 40 years only the poorest residents and lowliest of shopkeepers stayed while the buildings around them crumbled. Today, though the island tragically still remains divided, the fear is gone and the neighbourhoods are being rebuilt, restored and inhabited once more. I wanted to make a record of individual buildings before they're all renovated or demolished.
